Welcome From The Program Chairs
We are getting ready to welcome you in Madrid! The 34th Annual International Conference promises to be an exciting event.
We are thrilled about the innovations we have put together in the Madrid conference. For the first time we will have a Research Methods Track, which we hope will open new perspectives on advancing research practices within the SMS. As another novelty this year, we are presenting a new practitioner-focused initiative—the Executive Discoveries Series (EDS)—with the objective of creating room and opportunities to engage in a meaningful dialogue beyond academia.
Moreover, thanks to the contributions of the IGs and Communities leaders and members, there will be several pre-conference workshops on Saturday. These workshops are open to all conference registrants, although some of them will require pre-registration to facilitate planning and thus ensure a high-quality interaction.
Seven Conference Extensions have been organized: five of them will take place in four Spanish cities, while two others are offered by our French neighbors. We are confident that these sessions will provide the opportunity for attendees of the main SMS conference as well as other Extension participants to share and discuss emerging ideas in an interesting and enjoyable setting.
We will open the conference on Sunday with a plenary session in which Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, will be granted the SMS Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition to his commitment and contribution to responsible business. His approach to business shows concern with the impact on the network of stakeholders as well as on the environment.
The plenary session on Monday will be conducted by Ron Burt from the University of Chicago. In his presentation, titled "How Social Networks Create Competitive Advantage: The Micro-Foundations of Reputation," he will shed light on a critical issue: the influence of networks on reputation. The plenary speaker on Tuesday morning will be Martin Hirt, Director of Strategy and Corporate Finance Practices Asia at McKinsey who will talk about "Granularity of Profit."
An exciting set of showcase sessions will be offered on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. We encourage you to take a look at the online conference program schedule.
An important part of the conference are the social events. The opening and closing receptions will be held at the conference hotel as usual. The gala dinner on Monday evening-our most anticipated event-will take place at the Crystal Gallery.
The city of Madrid is also ready to welcome you! The modern and cosmopolitan flare of the Spanish capital offers you some of the world's finest tourist attractions.
We are looking forward to see you at the Conference in September!
